How to Select the Best Vehicle Transport Company for Your Classic Car

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Finding the right car transport company is an important task if you are in the process of moving from one end of the country to the other and you need to get your classic car to your destination unscathed.  There are many ways to distinguish one vehicle transport company from the other, and you will want to do your due diligence in this area to be sure you are making a good choice.  You will want to find a company with a good reputation, for starters, by asking for references and looking at what kind of reviews people have written.  One or two bad reviews out of hundreds would be normal – but if they are almost all bad reviews, it could be a red flag.  This is just the beginning, though.

One very important indicator of a reputable nationwide auto transport service provider is full licensing and insurance coverage.  The company you choose should be federally licensed to perform vehicle transport and compliant with all bond requirements.  They should also have full insurance, and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask them about the insurance that they carry.  This insurance will cover any damage that your car may incur during transportation, no matter how unlikely that may be.  Don’t be afraid to ask about any limitations or exclusions that may be included, too.  There are some risks in transporting a car that may not be covered such as flying rocks that could cause broken glass or paint damage.

Another important trait that a good car transport company will exhibit is a willingness to offer a wide range of shipping options.  Not every company will offer every option, so it’s a good idea to check to see what is available before selecting any company that you are considering working with.  With all the possible risks that could be associated with nationwide auto transport of a classic vehicle, it’s important to know for sure that you are selecting the best possible option.  This means selecting a company that offers the most options and has the experience and credentials to back it up.

Ford Flex: the First Full-size Crossover Utility Vehicle

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

A new crossover is on its way, although this may no longer be surprising since it seems like every other automaker has a new crossover to present but according to San Antonio Express News this crossover is quite different.

The crossover that the San Antonio Express News is referring to is none other than the 2009 Ford Flex which was introduced as the first full-size crossover utility vehicle at the New York Auto Show —and this exactly what makes this crossover distinct from the rest of its competitors.

Until today, crossovers have ranged from the original mini-sized models such as all-new Ford Edge, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, and the Suzuki XL-7. For this year the full-size SUVs that are available on the market are all truck-based models like the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

The Flex will help expand Ford’s already good selection of crossovers comprising of the compact Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner—both of which also come in gasoline-electric hybrid versions. Moreover, Ford sells the Edge, based on the chassis of the Fusion midsize sedan, while the Freestyle was based on the chassis of the larger Five Hundred sedan. For 2008 Ford will rename the Five Hundred to become the new Taurus, and the Freestyle to become the Taurus X.

Last year, crossover shows a strong sales return as compared to the traditional SUVs and most auto analysts believes that such trend will continue for this year. Also, for this year it is observed that the truck-based SUVs are somewhat going out of style similar to the way when minivans lost their market dominance.

Ford, which is also has Mazda, maker of quality Mazda truck parts and Mazda truck accessories as a subsidiary, said that the sales of crossovers in the US market are expected to reach three million units annually by the end of the decade. According to Mark Fields, Ford’s President for the Americas at the New York introduction, “Flex is another example of Ford creating more of the products that our customers really want. Ford intends to define crossover vehicles this decade just as we did SUVs in the 1990s.”

Last March Ford’s crossover sales in the US rose to more than 40 percent compared to the same period last year according to the automaker. Ford also confirms that the production of the Expedition will continue even after the Flex arrives. However if gasoline prices continuous to increase and consumers would abandon the traditional truck style SUVs in favor of crossovers then the production of the Expedition would then be reconsidered.

Ford spokesman Harold Allen said, “Expedition sales actually have been growing the past four months. The people who need the Expedition are still out there and are still buying it. One reason is the great towing capacity of the Expedition.”

Despite the fact that both Flex and the Expedition can accommodate seven people, the Expedition can actually pull trailers weighing up to 9,000 lbs while the Flex is limited to hauling 4,000 lbs only. The Expedition appeal to people with bigger trailers while those people who are interested in plain transport would prefer the Flex.

As of now the Flex remains to the only full-size crossover utility vehicle but since it would be made available in summer of 2008 it is not impossible that other automakers can have the same big crossover launched a little earlier and that would be not be good for the Flex.

Car Insurance Friendly Vehicle

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

There are many different factors that influence the rates of your insurance policy and the coverage that it provides. While many of these factors have to do with general situations, there are also many factors that deal with specifics. Your gender, age, marital status and working conditions can all be used to influence your insurance price and surprisingly enough the car that you drive is also something that companies will often use in determining your price.

On second glance however, the fact that your car is used to determine in part the rate of insurance that you pay is perhaps not as surprising as it might be on first glance. After all, cars tend to imply lifestyles and of course different cars have different concerns when it comes to repairs. Without discussing specific models of cars that might be higher or lower in the estimation of specific insurance companies, here are some general characteristics of automobiles and what those characteristics might mean for the insurance bill that you are forced to pay.

Repair History

There are many different types of automobiles around and many of them have very long road lives because of the excellent maintenance that is performed on them on a regular basis. These routine maintenance checks can prevent serious defects with the automobile and that not only saves you money on having to repair those defects, but it also saves you money because you might be able to sell the car later and get more money for it because of the condition it is in.

The same is true for insurance. If your car is well maintained and you have not had any accidents in that specific car, you might get a better than average rate of insurance. However, if your car has seen serious damage on multiple occasions and is not operating anywhere close to its peak form, you will almost certainly see that reflected in your insurance rate if the company sends someone to inspect your car. Cars that have been damaged multiple times are known as lemons and there are even laws in place to protect people that accidentally purchase them, but none of those laws can protect you against the higher interest rates that these cars tend to attract.

Type

Type is a really subjective term, but what it refers to is a combination of the size of the car, the weight it carries and the general usage of that vehicle according to the manufacturer. In essence, if you purchase a small car that you only plan to drive within the city and care for it on a regular basis, chances are pretty good that your insurance rates are going to be lower because the company does not see you as being a particularly high risk in terms of ever having to pay out on an insurance policy that you purchase from them.

On the other hand, if you purchase a large car like an SUV and take it off road a lot, you might find your insurance rates increasing because of the company seeing you as a higher risk. Remember that from the point of view of the insurance company, risk is a big part of the equation and it is the part of the equation that you need to reduce as much as possible if you want to get insurance rates. Smaller cars and safer lifestyles tend to reduce the amount of risk the company sees when they take a look at your account.

Conclusion

These are just two of the many different car factors that might factor into the insurance-friendly value of a specific car. Now that you know how the insurance company thinks, you should be able to evaluate your own car and see how insurance-friendly it might be.

My vehicle, a 99 Toyota RAV4, got a “check engine” warning lit up. What does it mean?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I brought it under check, the answer revealed 4 possible errors: – Mass air flow sensor (or MAP sensor) – Air fuel ratio sensor – Intake leak – exhaust leak.

What error is the most likely? Or all of them? What should I do to fix it? Thank you so much.

I am in need of a vehicle. I need a used, SUV that gets good gas mileage and is safe in a crash. Any ideas?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

My Dodge Grand Caravan got totaled this week, I need another vehicle. I need something safe (kids) and high up (SUV type) and good on gas mileage…and, oh yes, used as I need to pay for it with the insurance money for my Dodge..which would be in the $12,000 range.
