Tuesday, September 7th, 2010Toyota’s Winning Trio in Canadian Car of the Year Awards
Friday, August 27th, 2010Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) members pick Camry LE, Camry Hybrid and RAV4 as category winners for the 2007 Canadian Car of the Year. Toyota Trio were given the top honors. Toyota Camry LE won in the Best New Family Car, Toyota Camry Hybrid, in the Best New Family Car, and Toyota RAV4 V6 Sport in the Best New SUV/CUV category.
“Toyota is very happy to accept these awards and on behalf of everyone at Toyota in Canada, I’d like to thank AJAC’s members for these honors,” said Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at Toyota Canada Inc. “The Toyota Camry is North America’s most popular passenger car. The Toyota Camry Hybrid represents an important evolution of gasoline-electric hybrid technology in the second most popular market segment in Canada. And the redesigned Toyota RAV4 will be manufactured in Woodstock, Ontario when our new assembly plant, currently under construction, begins production in 2008.”
Toyota Camry, a midsize car built in Georgetown, Kentucky plant, is the best-selling car in the United States for 8 of the last 9 years starting in 1997. Now in its sixth generation, auto parts for Toyota Camry have been notably redesigned though the length of the car remained unchanged. Kentucky plant produces approximately 45,000 Camrys annually.
Toyota Camry OEM parts boast functionality and style. The new Camry is also being manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation Australia. The new generation Camry in Australia went on sale last August. Its model range is composed of the Altise, Ateva, Sportivo and Grande.
This year, Toyota created a hybrid version of Camry. It was introduced alongside with the redesigned Camry. The car employs Hybrid Synergy Drive setup, which is identical to that of Prius, Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h. Camry Hybrid uses a 4-cylinder gasoline engine that is capable of producing 192 horsepower. Standard features of the Camry Hybrid include knee airbags, side torso airbags and side-curtain airbags, remote entry and start.
Toyota RAV4, on the other hand, is a compact crossover SUV which was significantly redesigned for the 2006 model year. For now, Toyota RAV4 auto parts are assembled in the automaker’s Tahara, Aichi, Japan assembly plant. However, the assembly is expected to be transferred in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada assembly plant when the latter comes online.
“These three vehicles are extremely important to Toyota’s vision of the future of personal transportation in Canada,” Mr. Beatty continued. “Therefore, we’re pleased that they have been selected by AJAC’s members as the best in their respective categories.”
AJAC is an association composed of professional journalists, writers and photographers who are responsible for the coverage in Canada’s auto industry.
Report: Toyota subpoenas Camry in Lee acquittal case
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010Filed under:

With Lee’s name clear, a total of four federal lawsuits have been filed against Toyota by the family members of those killed in the accident. Each claims that Toyota knew of the unintended acceleration issue well before the Lee accident and failed to follow up on those reports in any substantial way. Meanwhile, Toyota claims that the accident wasn’t due to unintended acceleration. You can see the conundrum here. If Toyota proves that the accident wasn’t the result of unintended acceleration, then it may be the case that Lee was at fault.
Lee’s lawyer has expressed obvious concern over allowing Toyota to examine the vehicle unsupervised. So for now, it remains in St. Paul PD custody.

Report: UAW’s King holds the line on foreign car ban on union property
Friday, August 20th, 2010Filed under:

Drive a non-
Dornbrook may have a point, but King is standing strong on the union-made-only policy. The UAW leader wrote a long letter to Dornbrook – which the KCBJ published – accusing transplant automakers of refusing workers the right to organize. King then added that transplants have accepted millions in tax cuts to build factories in the U.S. while at the same time jeopardizing middle-class jobs. The UAW and its 300,000 members, meanwhile, still account for two-thirds of U.S. auto assembly jobs.
While “union only” parking rules are the exact sort of thing that has many Americans rolling their eyes at the UAW, Wayne State University labor professor David Reynolds suggests that the current economic recession actually makes the public a bit more sympathetic to the UAW’s situation, adding “there seems to be a better understanding of buying products and supporting companies that benefit local communities.”

Toyota responds to concerned owners with ‘Why is my car doing this?’
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010Filed under:

If you didn’t think that
We were hoping that the rest of the world already knew that, for example, jamming the A/C when it is hot will cause the engine to rev a bit higher, or that starting your vehicle when it’s cold outside will cause the engine to race for a few minutes. Guess not. Our favorite example is for protection of the catalytic converter. Toyota tells us that, on manual transmission models, the engine control computer will “keep the engine rpm above idle as the driver shifts between fifth and sixth gear at high speeds” to prolong the life of the emissions component.
While the list of reasons your engine may idle may sound incredibly obvious, it suggests that some customers are a bit skittish every time they turn on their Toyota, and that can’t be good. Hit the jump to read for yourself.

Japan’s Big Three Posted Increased March 2007 Sales
Saturday, August 14th, 2010The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) recently reported the total U.S. auto sale for the month of March. The report shows the auto market increased sales by 0.8 percent compared to March 2006 sales. The increase in the new car sales is affected mostly by Asian brands since the U.S.â Big Three reported reduced sales for the said month.
Japanâs version of the Big Three played a major role in the improvement of auto sales in the United States last month. Toyota, Honda, and Nissan all posted increased sales for the month of March. Even the luxury division of the said Japanese car manufacturers posted strong sales. Scion is the only Japanese brand from the three biggest Japanese car manufacturers to post reduced sales for the month of March.
The Toyota Division leads the way for the Toyota Motor Corporation with a 12.7 percent increase in their 2007 March sales. The division sold 213,820 units last month. That figure is composed of 121,881 passenger cars and 91,939 light trucks. Passenger car sales increased by 17.8 percent as compared to that of March of 2006 while light truck sales increased by 6.7 percent over that of March 2006. The Toyota Camry is still the best selling model for the division and the company as a whole with 37,110 units sold last month. Although the Camry showed reduced sales for the month, the Toyota Corolla takes up the slack by posting a 6.3 percent increase over March 2006 sales. The hybrid Prius still continue posting strong sales figures as the demand for green vehicles increases. For light trucks, the Toyota Tacoma pickup led the way posting 16.5 percent sales increase over March 2006 as 18,243 units of Tacomas were sold.
Lexus, the luxury division of the Toyota Motor Corporation, posted a 4.6 percent increase in sales for the month of March. The division sold 28,855 units last month and raised the year to date sales to 73,491 units. For the first three month of the year, Lexus has already posted a 7.5 percent sales improvement over the first quarter of 2006. The best selling model for the luxury division is the ES 350 sedan with 7,444 units sold and that marks an increase of 75.9 percent over last year for the same period.
Meanwhile, the youth division Scion recorded reduced sales for the month of March compared to March 2006. The tC sports coupe is the best selling model of the brand with 6,314 units sold. What affected the reduced sale for the brand is the reduced sale of the xA which is down by 33.9 percent for the month of March.
Honda, the second biggest Japanese car manufacturer, also posted increased sales last month as compared to March 2006. The Honda division sold 126,406 units, posting a 9.5 percent improvement over March 2006. The Honda Accord is still the best selling passenger car for the Japanese outfit. Sales for the Accord reached 36,506 units and that is an increase of 18.8 percent. For light trucks, the best selling Honda model is the CR-V, with 19,658 units sold, an increase of 49.2 percent.
The increased sale of the CR-V and the Accord helped Honda reached its best March sales in its history and as long as the demand for these models increases, not even a highly efficient brake from EBC active brakes direct can stop the forward surge of Honda. Honda’s luxury division, Acura also posted strong sales with the increased demand for the MDX and RDX SUVs. Both models helped the division reached total March sale of 16,986 units. The best selling model Acura is the TL luxury sedan with 5,769 units sold.
Nissan, another surging Japanese car manufacturer, posted a 6.6 percent sales increase for the month of March. The company sold 97,242 units while sales for the first quarter of the year increased to 246,436 units. For the first three months of 2007, Nissan posted a 5.3 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2006. The best selling model for Nissan is the Altima sedan with 27,521 units sold, posting an increase of 13.7 percent.
Infiniti, Nissanâs luxury division also enjoyed increased sales by posting 16.8 percent sales improvement for the month of March 2007. The division sold 13,877 units last month.
Report: Man convicted in fatal crash set free with Toyota sudden acceleration appeal
Saturday, August 7th, 2010Filed under:

Koua Fong Lee, the man who was presiding judge heard enough and released Lee prosecutor dropped the charges against Lee.
Lee served two-and-a-half years of an eight-year sentence for vehicular homicide after his first attorney actually suggested to the jury that Lee could have mistaken the accelerator for the brake pedal. Combined with the defendant’s limited English and the fact that few people had heard of unintended acceleration at the time of the first trail, the judge sentenced Lee to the maximum penalty under the law. Now that he’s been released, Lee says that he’ll focus on getting to know the youngest of his four children. Thanks for the tip, Brian!

Hybrid Cars: An Introduction
Friday, August 6th, 2010Have you been thinking about hybrid cars and maybe wondering what a hybrid is anyway? Well, in this article we will hopefully help you understand them a little better.
A hybrid is very similar to the gasoline powered automobile most people drive today, the big difference is the hybrid also uses batteries as part of their power supply, most hybrid cars on the road right now are gasoline-electric hybrids although, there are some that are diesel-electric, but for the sake of this article we will concentrate on the gasoline-electric powered car.
A gas powered car has a fuel tank, which supplies gasoline to the engine, which turns the transmission, which turns the wheels. The hybrid is a compromise, it attempts to significantly increase mileage and produce fewer emissions than the gas powered car, to be useful for you or me, a hybrid must be able to be refueled quickly and deliver around 300 miles or better between refueling. The fuel tank on a hybrid is very sophisticated. Advanced electronics allow it to act as a motor as well as a generator. It can draw energy from the batteries to accelerate the car, but acting as a generator, can slow the car down and return energy back to the batteries. It takes 1000 pounds of batteries to equal a gallon of gasoline in energy. This combination can and is cutting gasoline consumption substantially. I am sure things will only get better in the future for hybrid cars; they were a long time in coming and will not be for everybody. The cost for the hybrids is not as much as one might think although some do get quite expensive depending on the extras and options added, the same as any new automobile
Here is a list of what is available in gas powered hybrids on the market today and some that will be coming soon,
Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Honda Fit expected in 2008, Honda Insight, Hyundai Accent, expected in 2009, Chevrolet Malibu expected 2007 Lexus GS 450h, Nissan Altman, expected in 2007, Toyota Camry, Toyota Plus,
SUVs & Minivans- Chevrolet Tahoe, expected 2007, Dodge Durango, expected in 2007, Ford Escape SUV, GMC Yukon, expected 2007, Lexus RX400h SUV, Toyota Highlander SUV, Mercury Mariner SUV, and others will be coming in the near future.
Right now there are enough on the market to look at to see if maybe a hybrid automobile is for you. At first, the designs seem a bit different, they do take a little time to get used to, but after awhile though they do seem to fit right in and some will get you looking a second time at the smart design. Take a look and maybe a test drive, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the ride and concept of the new hybrids. They are different and will take some getting used to, but they are much needed and will do away with some of the other gas guzzling automobiles that are on the road today. I hope after reading this article you will have a better understanding of what a hybrid car is all about, they seem to be here to stay.
