All of the buzz about the recent massive recalls Toyota is in the process of making on its innovative Prius vehicle is sending the wrong message to consumers. But it’s happened in the past to other leading manufacturers; roughly 250 deaths are linked to Ford Explorers a couple of years ago with defective tires, and one year Ford pickups were spontaneously combusting due to a faulty ignition switch. Thus far, the recall has only really contributed to inconvenience for consumers, so the effects of the recall haven’t had quite the same impact as Ford’s problems in the last couple of years.

Well, this may be somewhat of a step backward for the Japanese manufacturer of generally high quality vehicles, but you can bet it won’t take Toyota much fighting to garner the same reputation for excellence it’s enjoyed over the past several years. For a car that sets the bar high for the auto market, the Prius hasn’t had very many problems. On top of that, Toyota has any number of reliable cars to choose from in its typical lineup, and 2010 will see renewed sales for Schaumburg used Toyota Rav4 dealers (among others). Truly, this recall is simply a hiccup in a long line of reliable, affordable vehicles.

Looking at the facts around Detroit’s own vehicular problems over the past few decades, it should be come clear to the average consumer that Toyota is allowed a slip-up every once in awhile. So, of course, GM and other Detroit executives are taking full advantage of Toyota’s mistake by publicly reprimanding the otherwise pristine reputation of the Japanese manufacturer. If Detroit wants a fight, Toyota is ready to take them on. Statistics show that – while GM, Ford and Chrysler are making a comeback in the industry – Toyota still holds the honors for the most defect-free reputation, regardless of what the past few months have held as part of Toyota’s beginning of 2010 nightmare.
