What small SUV is more gas efficient?

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

I want to trade in my 2000 mazda B3000 pickup truck. I’m looking for a small gas efficient SUV. I have a few ideas, but people tell me that they are bad choices: Kia Sorento, Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav-4… What would be a good choice? I drive a lot to get from home to school to work and back. I had planned on looking into either a Jeep Liberty or a Jeep Patriot. Are those good choices?

Toyota Gives The Highlander A V6 For 2010

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

“There can be only one” was the tag line of the old Highlander TV show, but there can be more than one option for engines for the 2010 Toyota Highlander. The Highlander comes with conventional 2.7 liter and 3.5 liter V6 versions, as well as a 3.3 liter hybrid version.  With these two engines Toyota SUV lovers have a choice between fuel efficiency or environmental friendliness.

The 3.5 liter version packs quite a punch, delivering 270 horsepower with its 24-valve engine, while the 18-valve 2.7 liter engine only has 187 horses. The 3.5 liter has a large increase in torque, delivering 248 foot-pounds compared with 186 for the 2.7 liter. Both engines are rated at 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway, thus there doesn’t seem to be a major downside in having the 3.5 liter engine under the hood.

Unless you’re driving a lot of in-town miles, the hybrid version doesn’t seem to be a great option, as it is only rated at 26 MPG city and 25 MPG highway; interestingly, the hybrid actually does worse on the highway than than pure gasoline versions of the Highlander.

If the rating specifications are correct, there doesn’t seem to much in the way of redeeming value for the 2.7 liter option, for it has less power and the same mileage. About the only visible advantage is the smaller number of valves to have problems with; other than that, there doesn’t seem to be a reason to go with the 2.7, especially if the Toyota web site is correct and that there is no difference in price between the 2.7 and 3.5 liter options.

The Toyota Highlander – how well does it handle heavy rain and snow?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I know the Toyota Forerunner does (I used to own one but it’s too expensive to buy now). I am turning in my Mercedes SUV – had it for 3 years and it’s just terrible in heavy rain and does not handle well at all under extreme weather conditions. Let me know how you think the Highlander will do?

How much are you paying for your SUV?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

My wife and I just bought a brand new Toyota 4Runner. We put $6000 down and pay $560/month at an APR of 3.9% for a 60 month term. I think our monthly payment is way too steep. We should’ve put down more.

I’m just curious out there. If you ever bought an SUV, how much did you put down, what is your APR, and how much do you pay per month?
it originally costed like 35,000 but I got a company discount that knocked off a few grand. It is a V8 sport edition with 4WD in case you are wondering why it’s so much. I know my payment is high, but I got a good job to compensate it.

Toyota MR2 Sports Hybrid Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Akio Toyoda may want to bring driving excitement back to Toyota, but he and his team have two major hurdles to overcome: The brands’s limited enthusiast base and the fact that Japan’s youth have very little interest in cars.

To combat both fronts, Toyota plans to launch a new line of budget-oriented vehicles that offer a modicum of sport. But so far, things don’t look too promising.

Despite debuting an FT-86-based concept at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota’s G Sports line of products have mainly focused on the Voxy and Noah minivans, while a “sports” version of the Prius is apparently in the works.

More interestingly, the Mainichi Daily News reports that a version of the GRMN sports car concept has been given the greenlight, meaning a mid-engined hybrid successor to the MR2 is in the works.

All these developments come after Toyota established a sports vehicle management division in January, which now has a hand in the brand’s overall product planning. We should get a look at the fruits of their labors during next year’s auto show season and could see this new breed of budget sports vehicles on the market – at least in Japan – within the next few years.
